Up to 25% of couples who have had unprotected intercourse for 12 months or more
without a pregnancy have the diagnosis of idiopathic (unexplained) infertility. This diagnosis means that, in spite of
exhaustive fertility evaluation, there is no apparent identifiable cause of infertility.
The vast majority of these couples do have a definite infertility factor involving the eggs,
sperm and/or the Fallopian tubes but their testing has not yet been able to uncover this information.
In vitro fertilization can be used as a very powerful diagnostic tool. The IVF treatment
will almost always establish the cause of one's infertility and, at the same time, potentially
correct or bypass that problem and hopefully result in a pregnancy.

areas of infertility.
