A persistent (more then three months) ovarian cyst may require a
laparoscopy (an outpatient surgery) or even a laparotomy (major operation) for its removal.
Since the vast majority of ovarian cysts are benign, some patients with ovarian cyst(s)
are candidates for a non-surgical, ultrasound guided aspiration of ovarian cysts.
A technique similar to transvaginal egg aspiration can be used for the cyst aspiration. This office procedure typically requires only local anesthesia.
The advantages of ultrasound guided cyst aspiration over the laparoscopic cyst removal
are the significantly lower cost of the aspiration and the minimal recovery period.
