Dr. Richard Schmidt – Physician
Dr. Schmidt received his undergraduate degree at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo where he studied engineering and biochemistry. He went on to receive his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his residency and specialty in reproductive endocrinology and fertility training at Valley Medical Center in San Jose and at NOVA IVF.
Dr. Schmidt joined the NOVA team in January 1997. He has been the Medical Director at NOVA IVF since 1999. He is also NOVA’s Laboratory and Program Director.
Dr. Schmidt relocated NOVA IVF to Mountain View, California, where, as a solo practitioner, he enjoys providing individualized, compassionate, and unique patient care. Dr. Schmidt and his dedicated team take pride in creating a comfortable and positive environment for all NOVA patients.
He emphasizes the uniqueness of every patient and the importance of individualized treatments for patients to maximize their chances of success. The science of fertility treatment is not always exact and there are many factors that may play a role in the ultimate outcome. This must be considered in every patient’s treatment.
Dr. Meera Shah – Physician
Meera Shah, M.D., F.A.C.O.G joined Nova IVF in 2017 and brings new expertise and diversity to the Nova team. Dr. Shah first moved to the Bay Area to complete her undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and South Asian Studies at U.C. Berkeley. She then attended Stanford Medical School and completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UC-San Francisco. She returned to Stanford for her Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship, during which time she contributed to several first author publications in leading journals, in areas ranging from fertility preservation for cancer patients, reproductive genetics, pregnancy loss, and ethnic differences in IVF outcomes. Throughout her training, Dr. Shah has been honored with several teaching awards and leadership positions which attest to her passion for advancing the field of reproductive medicine.
Dr. Shah is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate and individualized care to every patient. She takes pride in her ability to balance personalized care with an evidence-based approach to provide a unique patient experience to every couple. She recognizes that infertility and pregnancy loss is an extremely stressful and life-shaping experience, and is wholeheartedly dedicated to helping her patients through this journey to realize their dreams of building a family.
In her spare time, Dr. Shah enjoys hiking, travel, playing tennis, and spending time with her husband and 2 boys.
The success of an IVF clinic depends on the skills of the person working with the sperm, eggs and subsequently the embryos. As NOVA’s Embryology Laboratory Director (ELD Certification), Fen-Chi DeFalco, has created an Embryology Laboratory that is not only top in the bay area but in the region. Her exceptional skill combined with her rapid speed minimizes the exposure of the embryos to the time outside of the incubator. This type of skill cannot be understated in it’s importance for the embryo’s best chance to implant and grow into a baby. Fen-Chi’s major role in procedures and leadership in the lab has allowed NOVA to enjoy some of the best success rates in the country.
Fen-Chi along with medical clean room engineers designed the perfect IVF laboratory that opened up in January of 2012. This move from the old location in Palo Alto is already proving to be a positive step for our patients’ successes.
Sean Pae joined the NOVA Team as our Laboratory Supervisor in 2013. Sean is an extremely talented, educated and experienced embryologist with over 7 years of lab experience. Sean graduated from Cal Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Environmental Biology and graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School with a Master of Science in Embryology and Andrology. Sean is licensed as a Technical Supervisor through the American Association of Bioanalysts and has published scientific articles, oral presentations and abstracts in different stages of embryo survival after vitrification. This expertise in IVF with further ongoing development in new vitrification protocols, cryo-devices, and techniques has kept NOVA at the highest performing level.
Khanh joined NOVA in June, 2017 as a Laboratory Technician. She graduated from University of California Los Angeles with a B.S. degree in Biochemistry.
